Spreading awareness to combat the hazardous effects of smoking After having completed many other environmental campaigns and having achieved some degree of success in them, the members of Eco Club, Delhi Public School, B.S. City, were enthused to take up yet another campaign - this time against smoking. PURPOSE: To make the common people of the community aware of the dreadful effects of smoking and to persuade them to leave smoking and to help others leave smoking. The members campaigned from door to door. Their talks with people, their coaxing them to answer the questions on the questionnaire and eventually making them see the futility and the harmful effects of smoking not only hit the bull's eye but the students in the campaign gained a rich experience of the adult world and how the adults fortified their ego and their sense of superiority. 200 people were given a questionnaire and talked to. It is heartening to see that 5 of them have already quit smoking. No doubt initially the students had to face adult self-fortification but with a touch of affectionate concern the students could achieve success. The rest of the 195 are in the process of quitting and it is hoped that another 30 to 45 of them will join the group of 5. It's the school's and the students' concern for the human environment as well as the natural environment that brought the prestigious S.A.I.L Paryavaran Award to the school. The students are eagerly awaiting another chance to do something good for the community in particular and for mankind in general. CARRIED OUT BY: Delhi Public School, Grade 7 Bokaro Steel City, Bihar, India RESPONSIBLE TEACHER / SUPERVISOR: Mrs. J.R.Mukherjee SCHOOL PRINCIPAL / GROUP DIRECTOR: Dr. M.S.Tyagi
