Peconic Bay Composting|
As members of the "Save the Peconic Bays Children's Conference," we built a compost bin on our school grounds in February. We purchased special baskets for food scraps. We collect, combine, weigh and chart all the leftovers everyday. We've been collecting approximately 50 pounds of scraps per week. After we collect, we go outside and dump the scraps into the compost bin. We shovel it, add water, and turn it. This is done every school day and we'll have volunteers take care of it during vacation.
The purpose of this project is to reduce garbage throughout our school community, which would otherwise be sent to a landfill. Did you know that the average American kid sends close to his or her weight in food scraps to landfills every year? Whatever we do, tomorrow and today, doesn't end there, it goes back to the bay!
