Our Dream: Fluoride Free Drinking Water OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the status of fluorosis in various districts of Uttar Pradesh and to monitor the level of fluoride dissolved in drinking water. 2. To disseminate knowledge through fluorosis awareness campaigns on aspects of fluorosis at the grassroot level in society. 3. To develop a low-cost defluoridator. Our group visited districts Allahabad, Pratapgarh, Gonda and Fatehpur(U.P.) to collect drinking water from house-taps, India Mark II and "desi" handpumps, wells etc. We analysed fluorosis symptoms in people and fluoride in water. We also analysed deformities in teeth and bones and documented them. The Hon'ble State Governor and other officials appraised the magnitude of the problem. Dental Fluorosis was found 40-60% in school children at Allahabad. Brick kilns and handpumps installed at 80-100 ft., depth were the major causes of fluoride dissolution in drinking water. Fluorosis awareness camps in rural areas were arranged to educate people about the ill-effects of long-term consumption of fluoride affected water that frequently results into fluorosis. An indigenously built portable, unbreakable Domestic Defluoridator reduces fluoride content in water from 2.2 to 1.0 mg/l. It provides 10 buckets of fluoride-free water per day. An Anion-exchange Resin was used in a meter long column which continues with a tube connected to the water source. The ascending movement of water filtered through resin results into fluoride-free water that is collected through a lateral 18cm long connector.
