WASTE - DECHETS - ELRECICLAJE  WASTE

Achimota Secondary School Biogas Project

The enormous strain placed on our school's sewage system (built for a boarding population of 2,000 in 1927 but now handling one of 7,000), combined with insufficient maintenance due to scanty government funding, finally lead to its breakdown. This threatened the health of our community and the prefects decided to do something about it. They researched the feasibility of refurbishing the sewage treatment plant and using the school's abundant waste to produce energy in the form of biogas (increasingly necessary in a country plagued by energy shortages). The written proposal attracted funds from charitable foundations to begin the first phase of the project. We all learned from this process that human waste could be turned into energy and clean water for irrigation and that collaboration among adults, youth, students, parents and teachers could overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, financial and or otherwise to strengthen our communities and protect the environment.
