Recycling of litter after sports functions Our school is situated in an older part of Pretoria, fairly close to the city centre. We have as our neighbour, Loftus Versveld Rugby Stadium. After matches the streets are usually littered with beverage cans and other litter. To serve our community and assist with recycling initiatves, the Ecology Club began Phase One: clearing up the streets adjacent to the school. By also parking cars on our own premises we not only generated funds for the bursary fund but also confined much of the litter to one spot. Results: a cleaner environment, happy neighbours, funds from recycling. We now average 3000 aluminium cans a month plus paper and cardboard. Future: Phase Two to include food cans and plastic and Phase Three: Glass recycling. Problems: To motivate more participation CARRIED OUT BY: Pretoria High School for Girls, Grade 10th Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa RESPONSIBLE TEACHER / SUPERVISOR: Mr John Leslie SCHOOL PRINCIPAL / GROUP DIRECTOR: Mrs A Kitto
