No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
PLAIN LANGUAGE VERSION:
Nobody has the right to torture you.
Torture is not just hurting someone, but destroying a personís dignity and making it impossible for that person to continue their lives and activities. Cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment include such practices as corporal punishment, pain-causing devices, interrogation under duress, biomedical experiments on prisoners, the use of drugs on prisoners, and solitary confinement.
torture is defined in the Convention against Torture as an act by which severe pain or suffering, whether mental or physical, is intentionally inflicted on a person...by or at the instigation of or with acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an offical capacity.
