Note for Teachers

  1. This project intends to combine learning and action in the real world.

  2. Teaching units and other resources provided by the UN CyberSchoolBus can be used by schools for classroom study. The three units are:
    1. The Scourge of Landmines
    2. The Production and Clearance of Landmines
    3. Towards a Total Ban
Each unit is separated into 2 to 4 sections. Teachers can pick and choose from the units, according to their own schedules. It would be useful to correlate the section and unit with the week's q&a (see below).

  3. The Question and Answer sessions are a way for participating schools and students to get a direct sense of the issues by raising their own questions with experts, landmine survivors and others. These q&a's will take place once a week. The profile of the person being questioned and the subject they will speak on will be sent out in advance. There is a deadline for student questions (see the Program). With the profiles, we will suggest a unit or resource to help you prepare for the question and answer sessions.

  4. The learning and exchange processes should lead to action. Schools are asked to start their own Mine Awareness campaign. The campaigns serve a dual purpose: on the one hand, they will raise awareness in the local community about the scourge of landmines; they will be the basis for a fund-raising drive. In a separate message, there are some suggestions about how to conduct such a campaign. The funds raised will go directly towards demining areas in and around schools that threaten the lives of schoolchildren.

  5. The Banner campaign will be a movement of solidarity on the Web in favour of banning landmines. A banner (similar to ad banners on the Web) will be designed by the UN CyberSchoolBus. In December, during the Ottawa conference at which 100 countries will be signing a treaty banning landmines, we request that every web-site in the world place this banner on their pages in a gesture of solidarity.
