THE TRAUMA RELIEF PROJECT
The program is designed to guide young students
to understand the events of September 11th from
their personal point of view and with community
and global perspectives. We are especially concerned
with helping students resist the potential for
developing prejudices and stereotypes in reaction
to the attacks. For this reason the program includes
an extended examination of Islam and the nation
of Afghanistan, with special attention to its
history, culture, and the hardship that the Afghan
people have faced for many years. In addition
to working directly with students, we will also
lead a series of workshops with classroom teachers
to coach them in creative techniques that help
students process emotions about September 11th
in an ongoing way. The Trauma Relief program will
culminate with an exhibit of writing, painting,
collage, and poetry at the Empire State Building,
giving the students an opportunity to express
themselves to the New York community and beyond.
