August
Approximately 1,300 UN staff move out of their offices into swing space. Most of them relocate to 380 Madison Avenue, where eventually more than 1,800 UN employees will be accomodated temporarily.

July
UN staff begins to move out of the Headquarters. By the end of the month, almost all of the 750 staff members scheduled to relocate to the Albano Building are working in their new offices. At the Temporary North Lawn Building, installation of the steel skin of the exterior wall begins. Inside the building, ducts for the heating, ventilation and airconditioning system are put in place. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visits the construction site of the Temporary North Lawn Building, where interior partitions already mark the size of the conference rooms. Click here for photos. The fit-out of the Albano Building is being finalized.

May
Outside panels and roof insulation are being installed for the Temporary North Lawn Building. In order to secure it during the renovation, the Peace Bell is moved from the Garden Court to the Rose Garden. Click here for photos.The first significant permanent renovation work is begun in the basements of the UN Headquarters.

April
Work progresses on schedule for the North Lawn Conference Building. Click here for photos The first of the floors leased by the United Nations at 380 Madison Avenue is ready for occupancy at staff are moving in.

March
To protect the construction workers from the elements before steel sidings are installed, the steel frame of the temporary North Lawn Conference Building is wrapped in recyclable plastic sheeting. On the inside, workers apply fireproofing to the steel beams and continue to prepare the building for its future functions. Click here for photos

Within two months, construction workers have completed the steel frame of the temporary North Lawn Conference Building. Click here for photos

2008

 

December
In less than three weeks, workers have erected two floors of the steel frame of the tempory North Lawn Conference Building. Click here for photos. In the basement, temporary storage space is filling up with the stacks of the Dag Hammerskjold Library, while library staff has moved offsite to the Daily News Building. Construction work for the fit-out of the Albano Building and the first of the leased floors at 380 Madison Avenue has begun. The contract for the fit-out of the leased space at the UNFCU Building in Long Island City has been signed.

November
Workers continue to pour concrete for the foundation of the temporary North Lawn Conference Building. Big chunks of Styrofoam protect the foundation before concrete can be poured. Click here for photos. The design for the fit-out of the office swing space at the Albano Building at 305 East 46th Street has been completed. For the fit-out of the leased space in the UNFCU Building, the design work has been finished, and the procurement for construction services is under way.

September / October
Work continues to progress well on the foundation of the temporary North Lawn Conference Building. After a survey of subsurface conditions and pile augering are completed, concrete is poured in order to prepare the foundation for the structure. Click here for photos.

August
In the course of the preparation for the construction of the temporary North Lawn Building, the statues have to be removed from the North Lawn to a storage location in the Rose Garden area (click here for photos). They will be returned after the dismantling of the temporary North Lawn Conference Building at the end of the renovation in 2013.

May
Secretary-General BAN Ki-moon, together with senior representatives of the Member States, specials guests from the Host Country, and senior officials of the Organization breaks ground (click here for photos) for the construction of the temporary North Lawn Conference Building, marking the beginning of the renovation of the UN Headquarters under the Capital Master Plan.

March
With the lease of 423,000 square feet in an office building on 380 Madison Avenue for more than 1,800 staff members, the UN has secured leases for the entire swing space it needs in order to renovate Headquarters under the Accelerated Strategy IV. Staff is scheduled to begin moving out of the Headquarters in December 2008.

February
The UN rents 80,000 square feet in the UNFCU Building on Court House Square in Long Island City as office swing space for approximately 300 staff members.

 

 

 

2007

 

December
The General Assembly passes A/RES/62/87, approving the Accelerated Strategy IV.

September
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asks the General Assembly for the approval of an Accelerated Strategy IV with a renovation of the Secretariat and the Conference buildings in one phase, reducing the time for the renovation from seven to five years, but creating the need to find additional office swing space.

July
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appoints Michael Adlerstein as Executive Director of the Capital Master Plan at the Assistant Secretary-General level

U.N. selects Skanska USA, Inc as Construction Manager for the Pre-Construction Services Phase after a competitive bidding process with three proposals.

The UN leases the Albano Building on 305 46th Street with 187,000 square feet of office swing space for 750 staff members from the Department of General Assembly and Conference Management, who will have to move out of the UN Headquarters during the renovation.
