Friday, 14 December, 6:30 p.m. — Talking about the weather, next year's Climate Change Conference will be held in Poznan, Poland. Poland's representative in Bali just reminded delegated to "bring warm clothes."
Friday, 14 December, 4:00 p.m. — Some statistics on the final day: There were 10,886 participants at the Bali conference, making it the largest UN climate change conference ever held. There were 3,527 delegates from 188 parties and 3 observer states. There were 5,037 representatives of 349 non-governmental organizations and there were 1,497 members of the press from 530 media organizations.
Friday, 14 December, 3:00 p.m. — It was one of the hottest days in Bali today and also one of the clearest. For the first time since the conference got underway, the mountains to the east and the islands to the south, off Nusa Dua, were visible.
It was no day to think of bears, but on this closing day
of the conference, Greenpeace's closing stunt involved a big poster saying we "Poor People Can't Bear This," and several members wearing polar bear outfits saying "We're in this together," and "Save humans too." But the heat was too much and the bear masks came off quickly after the gig was up.
Friday, 14 December, 2:00 p.m. — There might have been snow and sleet in New York today, but looking casual and relaxed, New York City Mayor Bloomberg
came to the Bali Climate Conference to sign a pledge by world mayors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60-80 per cent of 1990 levels by 2050. London Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron joined Bloomberg in signing the pledge.
Bringing a taste of New York to Bali, Bloomberg said people like to leave conferences with real deliverables. He called the "real world," processes "that change the world evolutionary rather than revolutionary," and said cities were already taking major strides forward to deal with the issue. "It is important that people around the world see that governments understand that there is an issue and a healthy debate about what to do to solve the problems and who will pay and how fast to do it and what order to do it is part of the process that will lead us in the right direction."
Mayors, he added, are the one who are held accountable to their public everyday on a wide range of issues, from improving public health and encouraging economic growth. As a result, Bloomberg said, cities should be given more say in a convention like this because in the end we're the ones who will actually have to do the work for most of the changes.
Friday, 14 December, 10:15 p.m. — The big question today is when the Bali conference will finish. And how it will conclude. The negotiations went deep into the night, or morning, on Thursday, and few people actually expect things to wrap up before Saturday morning.
There's not too much news right now. There are new meeting of ministers, and then there smaller groups, "friends of the chair" groups and somehow this is supposed to sort itself out — but by when? There are questions over how long the conference can actually continue, when ministers have booked flights home, and how long the conference facility will be available.
