Sunday, 9 December, 8 p.m. — There were no formal events in Bali today but for local Balinese, the day marked the observance of the "dark moon" and many headed off to the nearly 1,000 temples dotting the island or held community observances. Some of these observances are also held right
off the main roads that slice through a verdant landscape of rice paddies, bamboo plantations, and trees that produce a extensive range of tropical fruits, coffee and chocolate. But as tourism is responsible for about 70 per cent of the island's economy, the
day off from the conference also offered an opportunity for delegates to spend more freely outside of the taxis and restaurants near the hotels and conference center.
