UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife, Yoo Soon-taek assisted with planting trees in El Agustino as part of an afforestation project to aid the degraded and vulnerable areas of Lima. El Agustino, a district of Lima, is located alongside a main river which has been vulnerable to soil erosion, flooding, and other effects of climate change.

The Secretary-General had recently wrapped up his visit to Lima, Peru, where he had attended the 15th Session of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) General Conference. Peru will also be hosting the 20th Conference of Parties (COP20) to the UN Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) in December 2014.
