End of Week 1—As the first week of the Warsaw Climate Conference winds down and participants prepare for the arrival of the UN Secretary-General and ministers, Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said it was still too soon to see what comes out of the myriad of negotiations that are ongoing.  She also states, “The first Friday of a COP is always an awkward moment because work is being done but there are no results to report.”

News of the announcements this week by Australia and Japan to sharply cut emissions targets right after the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines enraged segments of civil society and did little to project an air of progress.  COP President, Marcin Korolec says, “These are my top priorities to create the conditions to help us lay solid foundations for the new agreement.”
