Information note for civil society
and business organizations

The United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Event on climate change will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 24 September 2007, the day before the opening of the General Debate of the 62nd session of the General Assembly.

The Secretary-General is keen to include in the event the perspective of relevant stakeholders from civil society, the private sector, the scientific community, local governments, youth and indigenous people, among others. He is mindful, however, of the significant constraints due to the limited time and space available, as well as the safety and security requirements of such an event.

Consultations are under way with focal points from the above mentioned economic and social sectors to identify a roster of suitable, regionally and gender balanced representatives, who will be invited by the Secretary-General to participate in the event with brief interventions. The civil society speakers will be requested to provide perspectives on addressing climate change from the viewpoint of their respective sectors, with a particular focus on sustainable development.

The number of civil society and business speakers that can be accommodated in the various activities planned for the event is currently being finalized. The aforementioned consultation process will also identify a limited number of civil society representatives who will be able to attend the event as observers.

More information regarding the registration process is now available.
