United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is convening a High-Level Event at UN Headquarters on 24 September 2007 to accelerate a global response to climate change. The Secretary-General hopes that the Event will send a powerful political signal to the negotiators at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali in December that "business as usual" is no longer an option and that they are ready to work jointly towards a comprehensive multilateral framework for action after 2012, when the emission targets under the Kyoto Protocol expire.
Participants
The High-Level Event is expected to be attended by over 150 countries, more than half of which will be represented at the level of Heads of State or Government.
Format
The Event will consist of an opening session in the General Assembly Hall, followed by four simultaneous plenary sessions on the issues of adaptation, mitigation, technology, and financing. In addition to world leaders and other heads of delegation, a number of civil society and business leaders will speak.
The Secretary-General will open the Event and close it with a presentation of a summary of the main points articulated by the speakers during the Event. The closing session will be followed by a press conference with the Secretary-General.
Access
All sessions will be open to the media. Access to the meeting rooms will be subject to space and security constraints. All segments of the High-Level Event will be webcast live (and on-demand) in English and the floor languages. The press conferences will be webcast in English only.
