Tuesday 28 November 2006 - Zlata and Ishmael: an encounter between two children of war(for more details see the events section)
On November 28 the Office of the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict hosted a panel discussion between Zlata and Ishmael, moderated by the journalist Jimmy Bricks. Zlata and Ishmael, who have also the same age, had the possibility to compare their different war experiences in Bosnia and Sierra Leone. The event was attended by NGOs, UN agencies and local and international media.
The Special Envoy for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy, has expressed her profound shock and sadness at the events in Qana and the "brutal deaths" of 37 children and their families.
She strongly condemned the repeated attacks on civilians, and especially on children, and joined the secretary-general in calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Friday 16 June 2006 - Special Envoy Pays Tribute to Africa's Children Affected by ConflictMeanwhile, the special envoy of the Secretary-General for Children affected by armed conflict Ms. Radhika Coomaraswamy paid tribute to Africa's children, especially those caught up in armed conflict.
"I want to pay a special tribute to those 250-thousand children affected by armed conflict."
The UN Security Council has outlined six grave violations that can occur against children: recruitment or use of child soldiers; killing or maiming; abduction; attacks against schools and hospitals; grave sexual violence and denial of humanitarian access.
