Indonesia is home to 50,000 square kilometres of coral reef -- almost one fifth of the world's total. Known as the "tropical forests of the ocean", these reefs are home to a rich diversity of animals and plants. It's an abundant and beautiful ecosystem, but one that is also under threat.

A neighbourhood project in Dar es Salaam is giving financial independence to women while improving their community. The World Bank-funded co-operative provides freshwater at low cost to the impoverished district, and allows the entrepreneurial women a new outlook on life.

Farmers in Jordan are receiving support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD, as the country faces continuing water shortages due to inadequate rainfall and arid climate.  Collecting rainwater by using cisterns and building dams to control the flow of water are some of the initiatives encouraged by IFAD to keep farmers on the land.

The population numbers of this extremely popular and intelligent animal continue to dwindle in spite of commercial hunting bans. Many get accidentally caught every year in fishing nets all over the globe. A Program funded through the UN Development Programme is distributing acoustic devices to fishermen in the Black Sea to help keep dolphins at bay.

Farmers from Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority have partnered to overcome a serious pest problem in the Arava Valley. UN agencies first helped to set up a pest control pilot project in 1998. Regular releases of sterile flies by air and on the ground have suppressed swarms of the wild ‘medfly’.

But an innovative partnership between local researchers, traditional healers and the World Health Organization has resulted in the collection and labelling of many of these plants. The goal? The source of the next new drug that could fight malaria.

The UN's recent GEO 4 Report on the health of the global environment makes for grim reading. Published on the 20th anniversary of the Brundtland Report, and bearing the imprint of 400 leading scientists, GEO 4 says precious little has been done to implement the recommendations on sustainable development.
