SABC AFRICA to broadcast UNITED NATIONS TELEVISION PROGRAMMES


(NEW YORK) - Effective December 20, 2002, the SABC Africa commenced broadcasting a range of United Nations television programmes, including award-winning "UN in Action", short program series on the world's current affairs, "World Chronicle", a weekly half an hour talk show, and selected documentaries.
Airing UN-produced television programmes, SABC Africa joins a growing UN network of broadcasters that includes CCTV China, CNN World Report, RTP Africa, and RTVE and many other major international players. SABC Africa defines its mission as delivering distinctive and compelling programming through business practices. 'The Pulse of Africa's Creative Spirit', SABC Africa broadcasts: 20 internal radio stations in 11 languages, plus an external radio services in 4 languages, 6 television channels and 2 satellite pay channels.
Now closely working with the "best of" UN TV programmes and commanding a 74% share of the country's total prime time TV audience, SABC Africa remains to be a regular news information source for the bigger part of the South African population. Two of the SABC's three free-to-air television channels are dedicated specifically to public service broadcasting. Already a partner of the United Nations Live Radio, SABC Africa radio station broadcasts in 11 official languages of the estimated 29 million adults in South Africa.
The United Nations audiovisual department offers a wealth of videos, television programmes and archival film material to major broadcasters and well established producers. The United Nations welcomes prospective partners to jointly bring compelling human stories into the homes of millions of viewers around the world.
