ALPHONSE RETURNS (26'00") is a new documentary produced by the United Nations in Burundi and UNHCR. After 13 years of exile in Tanzania, Alphonse’s family came back home to Burundi where they used to have a house. Alphonse left his native country when he was a year old and, for him, Burundi was an imaginary country, a country of his dreams. Available in English and French. A Workshop for Peace is a 54-minute long documentary which unveils the dramatic story behind the design of the famous United Nations Headquarters in New York and how the vision of architects like Oscar Niemeyer and Le Corbusier shaped it. Produced and directed by award-winning American film-maker Peter Rosen, in association with the UN's Department of Public Information and with support from Tele Images International, a French distribution company, and Japan's national broadcaster, NHK. A Workshop for Peace was broadcast on PBS TV channels in commemoration of the UN's 60th Anniversary.

The UN Observer Mission in Georgia (www.unomig.org) in cooperation with the Tbilisi TBC TV Studio and the Sukhumi Television produced a 28-minute documentary which describes the past and present situation in the zone of conflict and the activities of the mission.

ABOUT UN DOCUMENTARIES

The United Nations produces documentaries on selected themes and on activities at Headquarters and in the field. Documentaries vary in length, from 30 to 60 minutes, and are primarily in English and French.

The UN catalogue includes over 100 documentaries in active distribution, including Armed to the Teeth, on small arms; Secrets in the Sand, on biological weapons; The Long Shadow of War, on Afghanistan; and For Everyone Everywhere, on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Many of the UN documentaries have won awards at leading international film festivals.

The UN also contributes to co-productions with broadcasters and recognized independent producers, and facilitates outside productions, such as A Workshop for Peace (Peter Rosen Productions, Inc.; U.S., 2005); The Peacekeepers (Office National du Film; Canada, 2005); and Kofi Annan: Center of the Storm (PBS; U.S., 2003).
