UNICEF Says Thousands of Children
Die Every Day
UNICEF says that 26,000 children under the age of five
worldwide die every day in spite of progress in improving
their health. The African Union Commissioner for Social
Affairs, Bience Gawanas, says Africa must do more to
pretect its children."Children do not
need to die because many of these diseases children
are dying from are preventable diseases."
UN and AU Envoys Say Darfur Crisis
Needs Speedy Resolution
United Nations and African Union envoys have completed
their latest round of diplomatic efforts to get the
Sudanese government and rebel groups to start negotiations
to end the crisis in Darfur. Salim Ahmed Salim and Jan
Eliasson say there is need for a speedy resolution of
the Darfur crisis. "The people of Darfur
cannot wait. The international community is getting
impatient."
Trial of Former Liberian President Charles Taylor Is
On Track
The trial of former Liberian, President Charles Taylor
in the Hague is making progress, according to the Prosecutor
of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, Stephen Rapp.
"We have had victims who've testified
in regard to the amputations, expert on the diamond
industry and on child soldiers and on the other things
that happened during the course of the Sierra Leone
war."

People of Eastern DR Congo Continue
Peace Conference
The
Conference on Peace, Security and Development continued
in the eastern city of Goma in the eastern Democratic
Republic of the Congo. The spokesman for the UN Mission
in the country, Kemal Saiki, says the meeting reached
"cruising speed" this week, with the setting
up of commissions to deal with specific issues and workshops
starting their work. .
UN Launches Emergency Appeal
for Kenya
As the humanitarian crisis continues in Kenya, the UN
has launched an emergency appeal for $42 million to
help thousands of people who have been affected by the
post-election violence in the country.
Floods Bring Death and Destruction to Mozambique
Floods are devastating countries in southern Africa,
as seasonal rains have caused the Zambezi River to overflow
its banks killing several people and displacing thousands
more. Mozambique, the country worst-affected, was better
prepared this time.
