People of Eastern DR Congo Continue
Peace Conference
The
Conference on Peace, Security and Development continued
in the eastern city of Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic
of the Congo. The spokesman for the UN Mission in the country,
Kemal Saiki, says the meeting reached "cruising speed"
this week, with the setting up of commissions to deal with
specific issues and workshops starting their work. .
UN Launches Emergency Appeal
for Kenya
As
the humanitarian crisis continues in Kenya, the UN has launched
an emergency appeal for $42 million to help thousands of
people who have been affected by the post-election violence
in the country. On the ground, relief agencies are providing
shelter and other basic needs to the people, including victims
of sexual violence and those who have fled their homes.
Floods Bring Death and Destruction to Mozambique
Floods
are devastating countries in southern Africa, as seasonal
rains have caused the Zambezi River to overflow its banks
killing several people and displacing thousands more. Fernanda
Teixeira of the Red Cross says although the floods this
year are worse than previous ones, Mozambique, the country
worst-affected, was better prepared this time.

Relief Agencies Begin to Help Kenyans as Situation Calms
Down
After days of turmoil sparked by the announcement of elections
results in Kenya, calm began to return to the East African
country this week. Marcus Prior of the World Food Programme
says his agency has been able to reach over 50,000 people
in need of food in the country.

A centre on Lake Muhazi in Rwanda is helping former child
soldiers to return to normal life. UN Radio's Diane Bailey
who recently visited the centre, reports on the experiences
of two of the former child soldiers in the centre.
Trial of Former Liberian President Charles Taylor Resumes
in The Hague

President Charles Taylor of Liberia appeared before the
International Criminal Court this week to face chares of
war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the civil
war in Sierra Leone. Elise Keppler, a legal expert with
Human Rights Watch talks to UN Radio about the start of
the trial.
