UN Envoy Says Situation is Getting Worse in Somalia
The
Security Council started the week by discussing Somalia
which continues to struggle to consolidate a fragile transitional
government. The Secretary-General's Special Representative
for the country, Ahmed Ould-abdallah says the United Nations
needs to launch diplomatic action to help stabilize the
country:
"The situation is dangerous and becoming more
so each day. Somalia youth has only one work possibility,
which is to participate in a conflict."
Kenyan Child Delegate Says Children
Want Quality Education
A
young Kenyan delegate to the UN General Assembly says that
poverty, education and health are important issues for children
around the world. Millicent Orondo, who was chosen by her
peers to deliver a closing statement to the General Assebly
and talk to the press later, spoke to UN Radio about the
message she brought to the United Nations. "We
want to eradicate total poverty in many of the slums in
India, Africa, and also that children can have quality education
and life skills education."
African Migrants in Search of
a Better Life Continue to Suffer
As
a reminder of the age-old human activity of moving from
one country to another in search of a better life, December
18 was celebrated as International Migrants Day. Many Africans
move from North Africa to Europe and Yemen in search of
work. Some of these would be migrants die during the dangerous
voyage across the Gulf of Aden to Yemen.

Climate Change Poses a Particular
Challenge to Africa
As
world leaders meet in Bali, Indonesia, to discuss climate
Change, the UN Secretary-General stresses the need to take
action to stem global warming. The head of the Economic
Commission for Africa, Abdoulie Janneh, says that Africa
stands to lose most from the impact of climate change.
General Assembly Holds Session
on Children
Senior
government officials, including ministers, attend a General
Assembly session on children. The meeting, which is a follow
up to the 2002 special session on children, is addressed
by Longeni Matsi, a child delegate from Namibia. He says
children are concerned about HIV/AIDS, education and participation
in the media.
UN Appeals for $3.8 Billion for
Relief Assistance in 2008
The
United Nations and its partners appeal for $3.8 billion
to help people in humanitarian crises around the world next
year. A number of these crises have been caused by conflicts
in Africa. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, John Holmes,
says that hundreds of thousands of people have benefited
from relief assistance in Africa. He points out that humanitarian
teams have devised and applied objective and rigorous methods
to rate the priority of projects so that donors know where
they should be looking first.
