Climate Change Poses a Particular Challenge to Africa

As world leaders meet in Bali, Indonesia, to discuss climate Change, the UN Secretary-General stresses the need to take action to stem global warming. The head of the Economic Commission for Africa, Abdoulie Janneh, says that Africa stands to lose most from the impact of climate change. "Climate change will put millions of Africans at risk of water stress and hunger and further threaten the livelihoods of those who reside in already degradated areas."

General Assembly Holds Session on Children

Senior government officials, including ministers, attend a General Assembly session on children. The meeting, which is a follow up to the 2002 special session on children, is addressed by Longeni Matsi, a child delegate from Namibia. He says children are concerned about HIV/AIDS, education and participation in the media. "Ninety-three young people, aged eleven to eighteen, representing fifty one countries, despite our twenty different languages, we are united for one cause, to create a world fit for children."

UN Appeals for $3.8 Billion for Relief Assistance in 2008

The United Nations and its partners appeal for $3.8 billion to help people in humanitarian crises around the world next year. A number of these crises have been caused by conflicts in Africa. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, John Holmes, says that hundreds of thousands of people have benefited from relief assistance in Africa. He points out that humanitarian teams have devised and applied objective and rigorous methods to rate the priority of projects so that donors know where they should be looking first.

Fresh Fighting Breaks Out in Eastern DR Congo

Fresh fighting breaks out again in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, forcing scores of peoples to flee their homes. Congolese troops in North Kivu are battling with renegade soldiers who are refusing to disarm and be integrated into the army. The UN Mission in the country has the mandate to protect civilians and support the army.

Eleven African Countries Join Forces for Rural Education

Eleven African countries, meeting at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, agree to join forces to provide education for rural communities.


Zambia and UN agencies Vaccinate Two Million Children Against Measles


Zambia's Ministry of Health, supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, vaccinates two million children against measles. UNICEF says the challenge is to follow-up and vaccinate more children as soon as they are born all of the time.
