Fresh Fighting Breaks Out in Eastern DR Congo

Fresh fighting breaks out again in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, forcing scores of peoples to flee their homes. Congolese troops in North Kivu are battling with renegade soldiers who are refusing to disarm and be integrated into the army. The UN Mission in the country has the mandate to protect civilians and support the army.

Eleven African Countries Join Forces for Rural Education

Eleven African countries, meeting at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, agree to join forces to provide education for rural communities. FAO's Lavinia Gasperini stresses the importance of educating rural people in order to meet the millennium development goals. "You cannot achieve universal primary education if you don't reach rural people because they are the majority and the ones who are still out of school."


Zambia and UN agencies Vaccinate Two Million Children Against Measles


Zambia's Ministry of Health, supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, vaccinates two million children against measles. UNICEF says the challenge is to follow-up and vaccinate more children as soon as they are born all of the time.

Head of UN Peacekeeping Says Sudan Creates Obstacle for Darfur Mission

The head of UN Peacekeeping operations warns that the deployment of a joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur is facing serious obstacles. Jean-Marie Guehenno told the Security Council on Tuesday that there are still serious shortfalls in providing personnel and equipment for the operation. "We have made some real progress at the level of principles but it's not principles that are going to save people, it's men on the ground, it's capacities."

Agriculture Agency Says Paying Farmers Can Protect the Environment

The Food and Agriculture Organization says that farmers should be given financial incentives to encourage them to use practices that are environmentally friendly.

Poverty and Diseases Continue to Plague Africa


Disease and poverty are problems that continue to interact and plague the African continent, as it struggles to meet the millennium development goals of cutting by half the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015.
