Head of UN Peacekeeping Says Sudan Creates Obstacle for Darfur Mission

The head of UN Peacekeeping operations warns that the deployment of a joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur is facing serious obstacles. Jean-Marie Guehenno told the Security Council on Tuesday that there are still serious shortfalls in providing personnel and equipment for the operation. "We have made some real progress at the level of principles but it's not principles that are going to save people, it's men on the ground, it's capacities."

Agriculture Agency Says Paying Farmers Can Protect the Environment

The Food and Agriculture Organization says that farmers should be given financial incentives to encourage them to use practices that are environmentally friendly. Professor Gerald Nelson of the University of Illinois in the United States, says that in Africa, such a scheme can also help to alleviate poverty while protecting the environment.

Poverty and Diseases Continue to Plague Africa


Disease and poverty are problems that continue to interact and plague the African continent, as it struggles to meet the millennium development goals of cutting by half the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015.

Allegations Persist About Alleged Attempt to Abduct Chadian Children

There are new allegations about the alleged attempt by a French non-governmental organization to fly 103children out of Chad to France. According to the Sudanese Commissioner for Humanitarian Assstance, Dr Hassabu Mohammed Abdelrahman, some of the children were from Sudan and the aborted operation was part of a plan to smuggle up to 10,000 children out of Chad and Sudan to be enslaved in France. He says French authorities and some UN agencies knew about it.

UN and Liberian Government Launch Campaign against Crime

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and the government of Liberia have launched a fresh nationwide campaign against crime, under the theme "Say no to crime, prevent it, report it". UNMIL spokesman Ben Malor says the campaign is aimed at encouraging people to work with the police to fight crime in the country." Everyone must come on board and report crime or suspicious events so that they can be dealt with."


World Bank Initiative Helps Young Entrepreneurs in Rwanda

Starting your own business can be a risky venture. But a new initiative by the World Bank aims to make it easier for young entrepreneurs to realize their dreams of running their own show. On a recent visit to Rwanda, Diane Bailey met two young entrepreneurs who are providing translation services and planning weddings.
