Second Phase of Darfur Peace
Process Continues
Efforts
to end the crisis in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan
are continuing following the first phase which ended in
Sirte, Libya last week. The spokesman for the United Nations
and African Union mediation team in Darfur, Ahmad Fawzi
says the second phase is now ongoing with a series of workshops
both in Sirte and elsewhere. "The process began
on Saturday, the 27th of October and continues and will
continue until a peace agreement is signed."
Somalis Displaced by Conflict Continue to Live in Hard Conditions

Somalis continue to suffer because of fighting between insurgents
and Ethiopian troops supporting the transitional federal
government in Mogadishu. The flare up of fighting between
these forces, nearly a week ago has displaced 90,000 people,
many of whom have fled towards the town of Afgooye.
Young Kenyan Campaigns for Women to Get Treatment for Fistula

Sarah Omega Kidangasi is a 31-year old woman from Kenya
who is campaigning to make women aware that there is treatment
for fistula. In May, after 12 years with fistula, she had
successful surgery. She was raped at 19, became pregnant,
and got fistula after 18 hours of obstructed labor ending
with a dead baby. "After three days of post delivery,
I realized that I was leaking urine and that is the time
I was told that I had got a fistula"

UN and AU Envoys Press Ahead
with Darfur Peace Process in Sirte, Libya
Talks to find a solution to the
crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan continue in
Sirte, Libya. Not all the representatives of the factions
from Darfur are participating in the talks but the UN and
AU envoys say the peace process has started and will continue.
Jan Eliasson says there is still a chance for all the factions
to participate in the process.
UN Agencies Identify Children
Who Were Almost Flown out of Chad
The saga of an alleged attempt by a French charity organization,
Zoe's Ark, to traffic children from Chad to France continues.
The charity denies that it was trying to smuggle the children
out of the country but was helping them find a better life.
UNICEF representaitve in Chad, Marian Coulibaly Ndiaye says
the children's agency is continuing to investigate the matter.
Africa Promotes Growth of Information
and Communication Technologies
African countries got a boost in their development
efforts with a commitment from a giant company to invest
more than five billion to improve their information and
communication technologies. These technologies are seen
as an engine for economic growth on the continent.
