Darfur Talks Set to Start
In Libya but Some Rebels Hesitate to Attend
The
much awaited talks to resolve the crisis in Darfur are
set to begin in Libya this weekend. Representatives
of various sections of the people of Darfur are expected
to converge on Sirte to negotiate with the Sudananese
government. The conflict in Darfur has killed and displaced
hundreds of thousands of people.
Congolese Refugees in Uganda
Are Reluctant to Settle Inland
The latest round of fighting in the North Kivu province
in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the
Congo has forced thousands of people to flee to Uganda.
The UN refugee agency has prepared a site inland but
many of the refugees are reluctant to go there. UNHCR
says the refugees prefer to receive assistance from
their relatives on the Ugandan side of the border.
Africans Continue to Die as
They Cross the Gulf of Aden to Yemen
Africans,
mainly Somalis and Ethiopians, continue to die as they
cross the Gulf of Aden on smugglers' boats in search
of a better life in Yemen and other countries in the
Middle East. The UN refugee agency says that this year
alone up to 439 migrants have died, with an equivalent
number classified as missing and presumed dead. The
migrants fall prey to ruthless and unscrupulous smugglers
operating from Somali ports.

Envoy Says Libya Talks on Darfur Must Go Ahead
Rebel
Sudanese groups that have not signed a peace agreement
with the government have been meeting in the South Sudan
city of Juba to try to come up with a common position
at peace talks on Darfur to be held in Libya on 27 October.
The UN Special Envoy for Darfur, Jan Eliasson says it
is extremely important for the people of Darfur to be
represented at the talks. "My view is that
we should stay the course and go for the talks in Libya
starting on the 27th of October. I do not think that
the situation will, in any way, improve by waiting."
Countries in Sub-Saharan
Africa Grow Faster than Global Economy
For the first time in years, Sub-Saharan African countries
are growing faster than the global economy. UNDP Administrator,
Kemal Dervis says this is due to, among other things,
good leadership."There is actually excellent
leadership in many ministries and in many countries.
And I think leadership in many countries is characterized
by a new can-do results-oriented and pragmatic attitude.

A Rare Vaccine-derived Polio
Virus Paralyzes Children in Northern Nigeria
A rare outbreak of a vaccine-derived
form of polio virus has hit northern Nigeria, affecting
69 children. Sona Bari, a polio expert at the World
Health Organization says this outbreak underlines the
importance of vaccinating all children against polio.
"It is a paralyzing virus which children can only
be protected against if they have been vaccinated."
