Security Council Condemns Killing of African Peacekeepers in Darfur

On his first day as President of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Leslie Christian of Ghana called an emergency meeting of the Council to respond to the attacks on a base of the African Union Mission (AMIS) in Haskanita, South Darfur. According to reports, rebels and militias in trucks outnumbered and outgunned African peacekeepers at a base manned mainly by Nigerias, killing at least ten peacekeepers. The Council condemned the attack and reiterated its support for AMIS. "The Security Council deplores the loss of life and injuries that resulted from this attack and conveys its sympathy to the governments, families and colleagues of those killed and injured."


UN Envoy Says Drug Trafficking Undermines Stability in Guinea Bissau



Drug trafficking is so serious in Guinea Bissau that it was the first issue that the country's president highlighted when he spoke before the General Assembly this week. The head of the UN Support Office in Guinea Bissau, Mr. Shola Omoregie, says drug trafficking is posing a serious threat to the country's economic and political stability. "If drug dealers are able to buy a parliament, then they have bought a government, and they have bought a country. That's why we are worried."


UN Rapporteur on Arbitrary Detention Talks about Angola's Judicial System

One of the casualties of the thirty year civil war in Angola was its justice system, especially its detention facilities and courts. A delegation of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention was in Angola last month at the invitation of the government to look into the situation. The Chairperson of the Group Ms. Leila Zerrougui, led the mission, and says that Angola needs more detention facilities, courts, as well as trained legal personnel in order to improve its judicial system.

The UN General Assembly holds its 62nd session, under the theme of climate change. Some of the African heads of state talk about the challenges that the continent is facing, including struggling to meet the Millennium Development Goals of reducing poverty by 2015.

As world leaders gather in New York for the General Assembly, the Security Council holds a top-level meeting on Peace and Security in Africa. Participants say that despite progress that Africa has made in resolving conflicts, it is still facing challenges such as instability in Somalia.


Humanitarian Diplomacy Faces Challenges in Sudan

As top diplomats and world leaders gather in New York, another form of diplomacy, known as humanitarian diplomacy, is being practiced in conflict or disaster areas by people who are providing relief assistance to the needy people. UN Radio discusses humanitarian diplomacy in Sudan with two of the people who have co-written a book on the subject.
