General Assembly Starts 62nd Session under the Theme of Climate Change


The UN General Assembly holds its 62nd session, under the theme of climate change. Some of the African heads of state talk about the challenges that the continent is facing, including struggling to meet the Millennium Development Goals of reducing poverty by 2015.


Security Council Holds Summit on Peace and Security in Africa



As world leaders gather in New York for the General Assembly, the Security Council holds a top-level meeting on Peace and Security in Africa. Participants say that despite progress that Africa has made in resolving conflicts, it is still facing challenges such as instability in Somalia.


Humanitarian Diplomacy Faces Challenges in Sudan

As top diplomats and world leaders gather in New York, another form of diplomacy, known as humanitarian diplomacy, is being practiced in conflict or disaster areas by people who are providing relief assistance to the needy people. UN Radio discusses humanitarian diplomacy in Sudan with two of the people who have co-written a book on the subject.

UN Secretary-General Launches a Group to Boost MDG's in Africa

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launches the MDG Africa Steering Group to boost Africa's efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals set by world leaders in 2000. He says he is concerned that Sub-Saharan Africa is still lagging behind in meeting the goals to improve people's lives.

Africa is Making Progress in Information and Communication Technologies


The Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, Hamadoun Toure, says information and communication technologies are critical for meeting the Millennium Development Goals in Africa. Dr.Toure says that Africa can meet these goals in the ICT if its leaders do the right things.

UN Human Rights Chief Says Violations Continue in Darfur


The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour says that violations of human rights happen daily in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan. She says that a peace conference to resolve the crisis and the deployment of a hybrid UN/AU peacekeeping force offer source of hope for improving the human rights situation in this region.
