The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launches
the MDG Africa Steering Group to boost Africa's efforts
to meet the Millennium Development Goals set by world leaders
in 2000. He says he is concerned that Sub-Saharan Africa
is still lagging behind in meeting the goals to improve
people's lives.

Information and Communication Technologies

The Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication
Union, Hamadoun Toure, says information and communication
technologies are critical for meeting the Millennium Development
Goals in Africa. Dr.Toure says that Africa can meet these
goals in the ICT if its leaders do the right things.
UN Human Rights Chief Says Violations
Continue in Darfur

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour
says that violations of human rights happen daily in the
troubled Darfur region of Sudan. She says that a peace conference
to resolve the crisis and the deployment of a hybrid UN/AU
peacekeeping force offer source of hope for improving the
human rights situation in this region.

Envoy Says Drawdown of UN Mission in Liberia Should be Gradual
The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Liberia,
Alan Doss, was in New York recently to brief the Security
Council on Liberia's steady consolidation of democracy.
Citing the major challenges facing Liberia as it continues
to rebuild its shattered economy, Mr. Doss recommends a
gradual drawdown of the UN Mission.
China is Helping to Resolve Darfur
Crisis Says Senior Envoy on Africa
China is seen as an important player in helping to resolve
the Darfur crisis. China's representative on Darfur and
African Issues, Liu Guijin, told reporters at the UN that
the exertion of pressure, sanctions and military power would
not be helpful in resolving the Darfur issue.
UN Official Stresses Need for
Laws to Fight Female Genital Mutilation
The
public outcry following the deaths of two girls, who were
circumcised in Egypt last summer, has created a momentum
for a campaign to ban this practice. Margaret Thuo of the
UN Population Fund's office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, says
laws are important in fighting Female Genital Mutilation.
