UN Secretary-General Goes
to Africa to Help Resolve Darfur Crisis
The
UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon announced his trip
to Sudan, Chad and Libya next week as part of preparations
for the deployment of a hybrid African Union/United
Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur: Mr.
Ban says that last month the Security Council decided
to deploy the joint force of 26,000 peacekeepers after
many months of what he describes as "difficult
diplomacy.""I want to go and see for
myself the very difficult conditions under which our
forces will operate."
Sierra Leoneans Prepare for
a Second Round of Presidential Elections
The
people of Sierra Leone are preparing for a second round
of presidential elections in less tha two weeks. The
UN Envoy, Victor Angelo, hopes that Sierrea Leoneans
will participate in the poll with the same enthusiasm
they displayed during the recently held parliamentary
elections. "The turnout during the elections
on the 11th of August was very high. So I believe that
again we will see on September 8th a very high level
of participation."
Economic Hardships Exacerbate
Domestic Violence in Zimbabwe
Unemployment
and chronic food shortages in Zimbabwe have not only
led to mass migration of Zimbabweans to neighbouring
countries, but is being cited as the cause of an upsurge
in domestic violence in the country. James Elder is
UNICEF Spokesperson in Zimbabwe:"Given the
enormous economic stresses in Zimbabwe colliding with
family and other challenges, there is great stress and
anxiety in families, and this often can lead to increased
tensions."

Council Extends Mandate of AU Mission in Somalia
The
Security Council this week renewed its authorization
of the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) for a further
six months. But two African diplomats feel that the
Council should do more to help AMISOM bring peace to
the troubled Horn of Africa country. Ambassador Dumisani
Kumalo of South Africa says: "The African
Union it's like when your house is on fire the neighbours
come with buckets of water, but the neighbours are not
the fire engine. The fire engine is the United Nations."

Preparations are under way for the deployment of a hybrid
African Union/United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur.
Tthe force is supposed to have a very strong African
character.
UNICEF Train Delivers Thousands
of Bednets to Prevent Malaria in Congo
A train carrying hundreds of thousands of
insecticide- treated bed nets donated by the government
of Japan, travels from PointeNoire to Brazzaville, the
capital of the Republic of the Congo. The nets will
boost UNICEF's campaign against malaria, the biggest
killer of children in the Republic of the Congo.
