Darfur Movements Agree On
Common Platform for Negotiations
Groups that have not signed the Darfur Peace Agreement
met in Arusha.Tanzania, and agreed on a common platform
for peace talks with the Sudanese government. But one
faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul
Wahid boycotted the Arusha talks. In spite of this,
UN Envoy Jan Eliasson, says there is now a need to maintain
the momentum to resolve the Darfur crisis: "The
situation is fragile and there are pitfalls in the very,
very difficult conflict of Darfur. So, we can't take
a deep breadth yet but let's hope very much that this
positive momentum is now being kept up."
Maasai Women Face Discrimination
in Land Ownership in Kenya
August 9 is marked as the International Day for the
World's Indigenous People. In Kenya, while the indigenous
people face difficulties related mainly to land rights,
Maasai women face double discrimination, as a Maasai
activist, Catherine Mutua explains."In
the Maasai culture a woman does not have any access
to inheriting land, resources or anything."
African Leaders Hold Capacity Building Forum in Maputo
As
part of their efforts to achieve the Millennium Development
Goals by 2015, African leaders held the Second Capacity
Building Forum in Maputo from 1 to 3 August. Dr. Hesphina
Rukoto of the New Partnership for Africa's Development
says the main resolutions at the meeting were about
strategies that Africa needs to develop and implement
to be able to achieve the MDGs.

Security Council Decides to Deploy
Peacekeepers in Darfur

The Security Council decides to authorize the deployment
of over 20,000 troops and police to protect displaced
people in Darfur. The head of peacekeeping operations,
Jean Marie Guehenno says there is no precedent of the
UN coming together with a regional organization like
the African Union to launch one of the largest operations
in the history of the United Nations.
Human Rights Committee Reports
Human Rights Abuses in Darfur
In Geneva, the Human Rights Committee completes the
review of the human rights records of Sudan and Zambia.
On Sudan, the Committee says although the country has
some positive developments, human rights abuses in the
conflict-torn region of Darfur are alarming. Patrick
Maigua reports from Geneva.
Leaders of Cote d'Ivoire Participate in Symbolic Burning
of Weapons
President Laurent Gbagbo and Prime Minister Guillaume
Soro of Cote d'Ivoire participate in a ceremony to burn
weapons in Bouke. The spokesman for the UN Mission in
Cote d'Ivoire, Hammadoun Toure, says the event was a
symbolic demonstration that the Ivorians are determined
to complete the peace process.
