Renewed Fighting in Mogadishu Forces Somalis to Flee Again

Fighting in Somalia is putting pressure on UN agencies providing relief assistance to internally displaced people and refugees. The UN refugee agency says it needs $48 million to assist the refugees. According to UNHCR spokesperson Catherine Weibel 10,000 people fled Mogadishu last week alone."This is a big reversal of the trends because, until last week, most people were returng to Mogadishu."

Ongoing crisis in Darfur Creates Problems for Sudan's Neighbours

The crisis in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan continues to pose serious security problems for neighbouring Chad and the Central African Republic. Refugees from Darfur have crossed into Chad which is also hosting refugees from the Central African Republic. At the same time, there are Chadians who have crossed into Darfur.

Attacks on WFP Food Convoys Increase in Darfur

The World Food Programme is alarmed by a dramatic increase in the attacks on humanitarian workers and its food convoys in Darfur. WFP spokesperson in Sudan, Emilia Casella, says the attacks range from shots being fired at vehicles to drivers being attacked, abused or robbed. "In the last two weeks, nine food convoys have been attacked by gunmen across Darfur. So that's half of the total for the whole year."

Burundi has suffered enormously because of conflict which has destroyed the country's infrastructure. Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, Carolyn McAskie says the new government has to keep the country on track for peace while meeting the legitimate aspirations of its people.
