The First Woman to Address a Summit of the African Union Reflects on the Relationship between Africa and the United Nations

The annual summit of African Union leaders ended on Tuesday in the Ghanaian capital Accra. The theme of this year's meeting was the creation of a continental integrated African government. UN Deputy Secretary-General, Asha Rose-Migiro became the first woman to address the meeting. UN Radio's Gerry Adams talks to her about the challenges of a Pan-African government.

An Urgent Appeal to Stop Severe Malnutrition in Kenya's Refugee Camps

Somali and Sudanese refugees living in camps in Kenya are in serious danger of malnutrition. Three UN agencies - the World Food Programme, the UN refugee agency and UNICEF- have issued an urgent appeal for funds.

It's the Halfway Mark to Meet the Millennium Development Goals. The deadline - 2015. Can Africa do it?

"Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day" - that's the first of eight targets to reduce poverty agreed by world leaders seven years ago. They're known as the Millennium Development Goals, or MDGs. At the halfway mark to the 2015 deadline, Kasirim Nwuke of the UN Economic Commission for Africa gives an overview of progress in Africa towards meeting these goals.

Sudan's Internally Displaced Begin Returning Home

Since the signing of the comprehensive peace agreement in 2005, more than 100-thousand people have returned to south Sudan. International Organization for Migration is helping Sudan's internally displaced persons to return home.

World Drug Report: Parts of Africa Show Increase in Drug Abuse

The World Drug Report 2007 says that for almost every kind of illicit drugs there are signs of overall stability, whether we speak of cultivation, production or use. In Africa, however, that is not the case. While drug abuse worldwide is on the decline, it's on the rise in Africa, says Thomas Pietschmann, one of the authors of this year's World Drug Report.

Central African Republic Refugees Flee To Chad

Refugees from the Central African Republic are making their way to Chad with stories of being personally assaulted and their children being kidnapped. Vladimir Mijovic of UNHCR says a refugee crisis is developing in Chad as people flee there from the Central African Republic.
