The Sudanese Government has announced its acceptance of the proposal for a hybrid UN-African Union peacekeeping operation to the violence-wracked Darfur region: "I explained to the Council that this was in our view a significant step forward."


A New Meningitis Vaccine Proven Effective in West African Children

A new meningitis vaccine has proven effective in West African children. An outbreak of meningitis was first recorded in late 2006. Since that time over 27,000 cases have occurred with some 2,000 deaths reported. Dr. Maripol Kieny, Director of the World Health Organization's Vaccine Research Initiative, talks to UNTV's Yvette Morris about the disease and efforts being made to curb it:
"Meningitis is a devastating disease. It can kill and it can also leave the affected person who recovers permanently and mentally handicapped."

The Unhealthy Effects of Extracting Oil from the Ground

"Nnimmo Bassey, Executive Director of Environmental Rights Action, based in Nigeria, is a human rights advocate concerned with the unhealthy effects of extracting oil from the ground. He spoke to UN Radio's Dianne Penn on the occasion of World Environment Day:
"Oil extraction is essentially harmful to the environment except where very extreme care is taken. But in Nigeria that has not been the case."

MDGs Data on sub-Sahara African Achievements released in time for G8 Summit
The UN has released a mid-term report on how African countries are doing in pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals. The report was timed to coincide with the G-8 Summit in Germany.

World Environment Day Festivities in Norway Open with Appeal for Planetary Care

A church service on Sunday at the Arctic Cathedral in Tromso, Norway started the festivities for World Environment Day this year. The benedictions were given in Norwegian, Inuit and Xhosa. The sermon was read by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. “The future of our fragile, beautiful planet home is in our hands. We are stewards of God’s creation.” A report issued by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) says the melting of the glaciers will have global impact, raising sea levels by 20 to 80 centimeters this century and affecting the availability of fresh water from the spring thaw of snow and ice.

Head of Human Rights calls for ending impunity for sexual violence in DRC

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for ending the impunity of perpetrators of sexual violence in the Great Lakes region of Africa. Returning from a 12-day tour of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, Louise Arbour focused especially on the DRC and the gender violence that has accompanied the conflict there. “The level of sexual violence in its intensity is pretty surprising and appalling.”
