UN Secretary-General Lays a Wreath
in Honour of Fallen Peacekeepers
The
United Nations personnel around the world commemorated
the
International Day of UN Peacekeepers on 29 May. At UN Headquarters
in New York, the Secretary-General participated in a wreath
laying ceremony where he stressed that it must be remembered
that the burden of peacekeeping is borne by individuals.
"The wreath we lay today will not be here forever.
But the memory of all those who have died will always be
with us."

Thoughts on International Day of UN Peacekeepers
Several peacekeeping operations are
in Africa. Some of the UN peacekeepers who
participate in these operations talked about their work
and sent messages on the occasion of the Day. They included
Major Samuel Njoroge, serving with the UN Mission in Ethiopia
and Eritrea."Whenever we wear those
berets in the mission area, you can see the people feel
comfortable. They feel safe when peacekeepers are there."

International Criminal Court Will Probe War Crimes in Central
African Republic

The
International Criminal Court has announced that it will
investigate war crimes allegedly committed in the Central
African Republic in 2002 and 2003. The Prosecutor for the
Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo, says the ICC took the decision
after receiving a referral from the government. "In
this case, the unusual thing is that there are four times
more allegations on rapes than on killings."

Need for a Political Solution
Jan Eliasson, the UN Envoy for Darfur, says that all the
parties involved in the Darfur crisis now realize that there
is need to start negotiation for a political solution.
