DR CONGO:
Counting of Ballots Proving Crucial
SIERRA LEONE: Info Minister on Power and Water Shortages
SOMALIA: UN makes important trip to Mogadishu
People in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo wait anxiously as the votes are counted. But what
about allegations of massive fraud? Plus the politicians
who are counting their chickens before they are hatched?:
"What we have are only partial results,
they are not representative of what happened election
day. So it's far too little to derive any conclusions,
or make any extrapolation as to the sign of the vote."
UN Spokesman in the DR Congo, Kemal Saiki.
There
have been severe disruptions in the water and electricity
supplies in Sierra Leone. We asked Information and Broadcasting
Minister Professor Septimus Kaikai why his government
appears unable to solve these problems. "There
is a statement, don't confuse me with the facts, my
mind is made up. If your mind is made up about something,
it doesn't matter how many times people tell you that
this is what we are doing, you simply refuse to hear
it."
For
the first time in a long while, UN agencies undertake
an important humanitarian assessment mission to Mogadishu
and found the place without guns. What is happening?
We asked senior UN official Eric LaRoche who led the
mission.

Congo Elections Prep
Three
militia groups in eastern Democratic Republic
of the Congo decide to lay down arms just few
days before presidential and parliamentary elections.
Spokesman Kemal Saiki says : "It is
a very encouraging sign, especially on the eve
of the elections that large numbers of militias
are willing to renounce violence and to go back
to their communities."
The WFP warns that it is running out of
food to help the needy people in the Ituri Province
of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Democractic Republic of the Congo is facing
many challenges as it prepares for historic electiosn.
Welile Nhlapho of the UN Department of Political
Affairs says militias have made access to certain
areas difficult.
