Five UN peacekeepers are released but a journalist is killed as DRC prepares for elections;
UN Relief Coordinator assesses Somalia's humanitarian situation;
WFP says it may stop feeding thousands of Angolans unless it receives new donations

Five UN Peacekeepers from Nepal are released after spending more than a month in captivity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. "We are extremely relieved by this happy ending of what has been quite an ordeal, especially for the soldiers that were captured," says Kemal Saiki, the spokesman for the United Nations mission, MONUC.

The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Jan Egeland, says relief workers are stepping up operations in Somalia."Somalia has been perhaps the most difficult case for the humanitarian community over these last fifteen years. For large periods the Somali people have been left completely to cope on their own."

The UN food agency warns that it will have to stop feeding thousands of Angolans unless it receives new donations. WFP spokeswoman Christiane Berthiaume says the agency needs more than $12 million for its feeding operation.

Addresses the African Union:
President Yahya Jammeh of the Gambia discusses with UN Radio some of Africa's Problems and Challenges:
UN Secretary-General Says UN Will Continue to Help Reconstruction in Liberia

United Nations Secretary-General goes on his last major mission to Africa. "This Union has recognized that Africa's partnership with the rest of the world must be based on solid achievements, and on monitoring of both donor and recipient performance."

The president of the Gambia, Yahya Jammeh talks about some of the challenges and problems facing Africa. "Africa is the richest continent in terms of mineral and natural resources. Up to now, why are we the poorest of the poor? Because the resources are not used judiciously, and we have endless wars that are creating problems for Africa."

The Secretary-General says the UN needs to help Liberia reform its institutions as it rebuilds after a civil war. He discusses his visit to the country with the chief of UNMIL radio in Monrovia.
