UN Secretary-General Says UN Will Continue to Help Reconstruction in Liberia

United Nations Secretary-General goes on his last major mission to Africa. "This Union has recognized that Africa's partnership with the rest of the world must be based on solid achievements, and on monitoring of both donor and recipient performance."

The president of the Gambia, Yahya Jammeh talks about some of the challenges and problems facing Africa. "Africa is the richest continent in terms of mineral and natural resources. Up to now, why are we the poorest of the poor? Because the resources are not used judiciously, and we have endless wars that are creating problems for Africa."

The Secretary-General says the UN needs to help Liberia reform its institutions as it rebuilds after a civil war. He discusses his visit to the country with the chief of UNMIL radio in Monrovia.

The UN Expert on Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy Talks about Her Recent Visit to Uganda; The Need for Deployment of UN Peacekeepers in Darfur;
A Kenyan Developer Talks about the Challenges of Building Houses in Kenya

The United Nations expert on Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy recently visited Uganda to negotiate with the government an action plan to stop the recruitment of child soldiers by the army and rebel group. She says there is need to address the problem of children who live in camps for displaced people in Northern Uganda:

"Basically, we have to get children out of the armed forces. Secondly, we have to move into a situation where we can help reintegrate them back into the community."

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the head of peacekeeping operations, Jean-Marie Guehenno say a United Nations peacekeeping force and a political solution are needed to resolve the Darfur crisis. In the meantime, African Union peacekeepers need to be strengthened until such an international force is deployed:

"We would also need a force that is mobile in the air and on the ground and would be able to respond to crisis or SOS and be on the ground to make a difference before it is too late."
