The UN Expert
on Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy
Talks about Her Recent Visit to Uganda; The Need for
Deployment of UN Peacekeepers in Darfur; a Kenyan Developer
Talks about the Challenges of Building Houses in Kenya
The United Nations expert on Children and Armed Conflict,
Radhika Coomaraswamy recently visited Uganda to negotiate
with the government an action plan to stop the recruitment
of child soldiers by the army and rebel group. She says
there is need to address the problem of children who
live in camps for displaced people in Northern Uganda:

"Basically, we have to get children out of the
armed forces. Secondly, we have to move into a situation
where we can help reintegrate them back into the community."
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the
head of peacekeeping operations, Jean-Marie Guehenno
say a United Nations peacekeeping force and a political
solution are needed to resolve the Darfur crisis. In
the meantime, African Union peacekeepers need to be
strengthened until such an international force is deployed:

"We would also need a force that is mobile
in the air and on the ground and would be able to respond
to crisis or SOS and be on the ground to make a difference
before it is too late."
A Kenyan Developer, Johnson Mwaura, one of a few Africans
with a housing company talks about the difficulties
of getting loans to build houses. He says Kenya has
a serious shortage of housing for low income people.

UN Human Rights Council holds its 1st Session
in Geneva;
Refugee All Stars of Sierra Leone Keep the Flame
of Hope Alive With Music;
UN-Habitat Ambassador Joaquim Chissano Talks About
Need to Develop African Youth
The 47-member UN Human Rights Council
began its inaugural session in Geneva with representatives
of more than 100 countries and UN Officials attending:
"Conflict,
disease, poverty, inequality have taken a very
important share in African destiny and certainly
have a very heavy impact on the enjoyment of human
rights in Africa," says Bacre
Ndiaye, Director of the New York Office of the
UN Human Rights Commisioner, speaking in Geneva.
Reuben
Koroma, the leader of the Refugee All Stars band
of former Sierra Leoneans talks about keeping
hope alive. He recalls what it was like when he
returned to his country after leaving as a refugee."I
felt very bad at first. I saw that many good places
have been destroyed and most of my loved ones
are dead. For about three or four months, I was
not happy."
Former
President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique has been
appointed UN Habitat ambassador to promote the
development of urban youth in Africa. At the World
Urban Forum in Vancouver Canada, he says young
people should be involved in finding solutions
to the problem of slums.
