SUDAN - DARFUR: AN INTERVIEW WITH JAN EGELAND
DR CONGO: ALLEGED
FOREIGN COUP PLOTTERS ARRESTED
ANGOLA: DEVASTATING OUTBREAK OF CHOLERA
As millions of suffering people from Sudan's Darfur
region wait for the implementation of the new peace
accord, we hear from the UN's top Humanitarian official,
Jan Egeland, about his recent visit to Sudan and the
prospects for Darfur. "I
was more optimistic than I have been quite a while,
now because we have hope, we have an agreement that
should also lead to the strengthening of the African
Union force on the ground immediately, then the bridge
over to the UN force, which could really provide security,
when we could see, hopefully, a sizable return of the
displaced to the villages."
The government of the DR Congo reports that it has arrested
a number of foreigners suspected of involvement in an
alleged coup plot. How does this affect preparations
for elections scheduled for the end of July?
A
devastating outbreak of cholera in Angola kills more
than one thousand people, and causes serious concerns
for the government and the international community,
as it continues to spread. WHO Medical Officer in Angola,
Claire-Lise Chaignat, says hygiene practices must change
if the disease must be kept at bay in the long term:
"The treatment is extremely simple. You
have to rehydrate the patient with ORS - Oral Rehydration
Salt. So, I think today nobody should die of cholera."

SOMALIA:
HUNDREDS KILLED AS ISLAMISTS FIGHT OPPOSING WARLORDS,
KENYA - CORRUPTION: MINISTER KOIGI SPEAKS
:
More than 150 people are killed in Mogadishu in
an unusual upsurge in fighting but why? And what
about the UN arms embargo on Somalia?"The
Security Council issued a strong statement and
the group was indicating that some neighbouring
countries and also foreign countries are helping,
are violating the arms embargo," says
the top UN Official for Somalia, Francois Lonseny
Fall.
Corruption
within the Kenyan government continues to raise
eyebrows. We ask Assistant Minister Koigi Wa Wamwere
how it can be defeated: "We must all
change our attitudes. We must forget the idea
that the only way one can survive is by being
rich, and by being rich by hook or crook."
