Refugee Agency Warns of Impending Calamity in Darfur,
Sudan;
Eight Peacekeepers are Killed in the Democratic Republic
of the Congo;
The African Continent Faces Housing Problems
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres,
tells the Security Council that the situation in Darfur,
Sudan has deteriorated severely over the past six months
with violent attacks happening everyday. "Just
a few days ago, armed rebels took several government
officials hostage and attacked the village of Guéréda,
where UNHCR cares for over 25,000 Sudanese refugees.''
"
Eight Guatemalan troops are killed in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo as they look for Ugandan rebels
of the Lord's Resistance Army. The Division Commander
in the eastern part of the country, Major General Patrick
Cammaerts Says UN peacekeepers are supporting Congolese
forces in operations against the LRA. "We
have a mission here. We take a firm robust stance against
armed groups, negative forces, killers, rapists, torturers
and so on and so forth, according to our mandate and
according to our rules of engagement.''
The
Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Anna Tibajuka, says
that over 200 million people in sub-Saharan Africa live
in slums. She stresses that political will is needed
to solve the problem.

"Progress
in Cote d'Ivoire peace process jeopardized as
supporters of president stage demonstrations targeted
at UN Mission"
"A New UN Mission in Sierra Leone is helping
to consolidate peace and promote development"
This
week began with disturbing developments in the
peace process in Cote d'Ivoire as young supporters
of President Laurent Gbagbo staged a wave of protests
in Abidjan against a recommendation by an international
panel that the national parliament should be dissolved.
Sputnik Kilambi is the head of UNOCI-FM, a United
Nations radio operation in Cote d'Ivoire"They
think that this is the first step toward putting
Cote d'Ivoire under UN supervision and therefore
it's an attack againts Ivorian sovereignty."
A
new mission has started its work in Sierra Leone
to help the country consolidate peace and rebuild
its economy. The head of the United Nations Integrated
Office in Sierra Leone, as the mission is known,
is Victor Angelo."We really believe
that if the international community remains focused
on Sierra Leone, this country will move forward,
will not relapse into conflict, and will become
an example and the beacon of hope in West Africa."
