IMPORTANCE OF USING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TO BENEFIT EVERYONE;
A MISSION TO CENTRAL AFRICA REPORTS TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL; AND
A PROMISING VACCINE AGAINST MALARIA

Thousands of delegates have gathered in Tunisia to discuss the role of information and communication technologies. At the opening of the World Summit on the Information Technology, UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan stressed the importance of using information technology to benefit all classes of people, a point he repeated to reporters later.

"We do believe that information technology is a tool that can help us accelerate the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. It is a tool that can help us expand education and ensure that young people everywhere have access to educational material and even do long distance learning."

A mission that went to Central Africa reported to the Security Council earlier this week. Its leader was Ambassador Jean Marc de la Sabbliere.

"The success of our common undertaking in Central Africa has importance which goes beyond the sub-region, well beyond. I think it's important for the whole of Africa, and this in itself justifies the Council going to the region every year, and it's done so for six years now, I believe."

SOMALIA: CALL FOR SECURITY ASSISTANCE, AND SOUTHERN AFRICAN FOOD CRISIS

Results from Liberia's run-off presidential election suggest Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf could soon become the country's next president, but the other contender, who got the most votes in the first round, former world football star George Oppong Weah is alleging fraud. Does he have a case?

"We have advised him that obviously, we would take such allegations seriously because I think we all want to ensure that this election is not marred by fraud..," says the head of UNMIL, the UN Peacekeeping mission in Liberia, Alan Doss.
