UNICEF ON HIV/AIDS-AFFECTED
CHILDREN
The
UN's Children's Agency and UNAIDS join others
to launch a new campaign to highlight the plight
of millions of children affected by HIV/AIDS -
the majority of them in Africa. "Every
minute of every day, a child dies because of AIDS,"
says Ann Veneman of UNICEF.
Twenty-year-old
Namibian mother, Livey Van Wyk speaks about her
experience living with HIV/AIDS: "When
I was 17, the same day I found out I was pregnant.
I also found out I was HIV positive. My mother
banished me to my grandmother's farm. The local
people were afraid of HIV ... When they saw me,
they would throw stones at me."
And UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, cites some
examples for governments around the world. Plus
the Rwandan First Lady, Jeanette Kagame , who
is President of the Organizations of African Ladies
Against HIV/AIDS.
