LIBERIA: RUN-OFF PRESIDENTIAL POLLS
ERITREA: UN PEACEKEEPING SUFFERS FROM BAN

Liberia's presidential election goes into a second-round on November 8th, with Football star George Weah in the lead against former World Bank official, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. But the head of the National Elections Commission, Frances Johnson-Morris receives death threats:"In fact, since the elections started, we have increased our security coverage of the national elections commission and the chairman, just to be sure that there are no incidents. ... I hope these were empty threats, but nevertheless, we are not going to take any risk ..."
says UN Envoy Alan Doss.

ERITREA: Why is the government of President Isaias Aferwerki continuing to restrict the work of the UN Mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea, UNMEE? UNSG Kofi Annan: "We are placed in a situation where the government has not been cooperating and has limited the movement of our troops ."

SRSG Legwaila: "Eritrea, understandably, is angry with the international community, with the Security Council for not doing enough to break the stalemate. Unfortunately, they are punishing the wrong party, the innocent party which is UNMEE ."

ROLLING BACK MALARIA: CONCERT IN GENEVA

Liberians wait anxiously as the ballots from Tuesday's peaceful and orderly elections are counted. The head of Liberia's National Elections Commission, Madame Frances Johnson-Morris (left) and outgoing Liberian leader, Charles Gyudeh Bryant caution against any hasty interpretations of partial results.
