15th September 2005 - Programme Number 65

THE 2005 UN WORLD SUMMIT AND AFRICA

As more than 150 heads of state and government meet at UN Headquarters in the largest ever gathering of world leaders, we examine what the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and African leaders like Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo are saying:"Africa needs genuine partnership in order to overcome its numerous challenges and problems. Among other options, Africa needs market access and investments to generate resources to meet the Millennium Development Goals."

Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa says his country has already achieved one of the Millennium Development Goals. But Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says there are so many odds against his country: "... Our efforts have been seriously affected by recurrent droughts and floods, HIV and AIDS and unilateral sanctions imposed on us by countries that do not wish us well."

Plus what some prominent world leaders, like Britain's Tony Blair are saying about Africa..."When we look with revulsion, as we should, at the misery of the millions who die in Africa and elsewhere through preventable famine, disease and conflict, the urgency to act is driven not just by conscience but by an inner sense that one day, if we refuse to act, we will reap a dire reward from our refusal. THE 2005 WORLD SUMMIT

An independent committee set up by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to investigate the Iraq Oil-for-Food Programme criticizes his overall management of the programme, but clears him of abusing his influence and authority. What is Mr Annan's response?"The report is critical of me personally, and I accept the criticism. Earlier this year the Committee concluded that I did not influence or attempt to influence the procurement process. I am glad to note that the conclusion is reaffirmed."
