PAUL VOLCKER'S OIL-FOR-FOOD REPORT AND ITS
IMPACT ON THE UN AND MR KOFI ANNAN,
&
AFRICA AND THE 2005 WORLD SUMMIT

An independent committee set up by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to investigate the Iraq Oil-for-Food Programme criticizes his overall management of the programme but clears him of abusing his influence and authority. How damaging is this for the Secretary-General and what is his response?"The report is critical of me personally, and I accept the criticism. Earlier this year the Committee concluded that I did not influence or attempt to influence the procurement process. I am glad to note that the conclusion is reaffirmed."
We'll hear from UN Under-Secretary-General Ibrahim Gambari ( right) on the report's impact on the UN and on the Secretary-General.

And as more than one hundred world leaders arrive at the UN for the 2005 World Summit, we ask: What can Africa expect from this, the largest gathering of world leaders?"... And yes, some people might believe that leaders are only coming to make speeches and to shop. That is not the case because they are coming here to endorse a programme that has been negotiated painstakingly, " says UN Assistant-Secretary-General, Tuliameni Kalomoh.

MORE SETBACKS AND
KENYA'S WATER MINISTER ON
POVERTY AND THE MDGS

Cote D'Ivoire's peace process suffers another blow as the South African government reviews its mediation role and the rebels controlling the north of the country say they don't want to deal with the South Africans anyway. Could UN sanctions save the process?"We are not very keen to punish people. We are very keen to solve the problem. But, of course, the United Nations will have to decide on this with the African Union and if there are people that are culprits that's a matter that they will decide," says South African Defence Minister Mosioua Lekota.
