COTE D'IVOIRE: MORE SETBACKS AND
KENYA'S WATER MINISTER ON
POVERTY AND THE MDGS

Cote D'Ivoire's peace process suffers another blow as the South African government reviews its mediation role and the rebels controlling the north of the country say they don't want to deal with the South Africans anyway. Could UN sanctions save the process?"We are not very keen to punish people. We are very keen to solve the problem. But, of course, the United Nations will have to decide on this with the African Union and if there are people that are culprits that's a matter that they will decide," says South African Defence Minister Mosioua Lekota.

As world leaders prepare to attend the 2005 UN Summit in New York in two weeks time, Kenya's Minister for Water and Development, Martha Karua, highlights one key issue world leaders must tackle - water and its interconnections with poverty and education. "In a way, water is linked to all the MDGs, including that of universal primary education for both boys and girls. Girls drop out when they spend the whole day or days on end in search of water."

UN SECRETARY-GENERAL VISITS NIGER & COTE D'IVOIRE - THREAT OF A COUP PLOT

UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan has visited Niger to see for himself the scale of the food crisis that has left more than 2.5 million people in urgent need of food aid. Mr. Annan has tried to avoid controversy and criticism that the UN response in Niger has been slow and late: "I think this is an unfortunate debate. What is important is for us to focus on providing emergency aid to those who need it."
