7 July 2005: Programme Number 55

THE G8, AFRICA AND THE UNITED NATIONS, PLUS
THE ROLE OF AFRICAN BUSINESS

With the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, campaigning strongly to place African poverty and Africa's needs on the agenda of the leaders of the G8, we ask the deputy head of the UN Development Programme, Zephirin Diabre, what Africa could really expect from the G8 Summit: "I don't think we as Africans should spend our time expecting others to come and solve our problems. It is a good thing if our issues are being taken upfront by our partners. But it goes without saying that the main responsibilities for finding the solutions remain in the African."

And, what about Africa's private sector: Former Nigerian Minister for Industries and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, says African businesses are being ignored in the continent's development: "Ignoring the private sector is a serious mistake. Political boundaries have been established but business has no boundaries, it goes where it increases its value."
