17 March 2005: Programme Number 39

ETHIOPIA/ERITREA: The UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea is still not able to complete its work as a result of a stalemate on the demarcation of the border which sparked a war between the two countries:
"Recently, the Ethiopians have beefed up their frontline and that has addred to more tension."

DARFUR CRISIS: The United Nations has withdrawn its relief workers from western Darfur because militias have threatened to attack them:

"In the short run that's not a big problem because food had been delivered. But I am sure it has negative consequences."

HIV/AIDS: UNAIDS recently issued a report outlining three scenarios of the AIDS Epidemic in Africa in the next 25 years.
"If we put enough money in prevention and treatment, it looks like 20 years down the road, we will have a better impact rather than make these choices between whether prevention or treatment."

STATUS ON WOMEN

Ten years after the world conference on women which was held in Beijing, women from around the world came to the UN Headquarters to review progress that has been made. The review coincided with this year’s session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The Executive Director of the UN Development Fund for Women, Noeleen Heyzer says that while progress has been made in the advancement of women, more still needs to be done. The Executive Director of Femmes Africa Solidarite, Bineta Diop says that African women are no longer mere victims of violence but are actively engaged in efforts to resolve conflicts in Africa.
